Google acquires Motorola Mobility for 12.5 billion

Motorola Mobility was acquired yesterday by Google. What does that mean for the Motorola Xoom and future tablets from Motorola/Google? None of the news is bad.

The main reason that Google purchased Motorola Mobility was for its extensive patent portfolio to defend Android from Microsoft, Oracle, and Apple. Other Android partners have released official statements claiming to be happy about the merger because Google will be able to better defend Android for them. At the same time these manufacturers hope that Motorola will not receive special treatment and get builds of Android early. Google claims that this will not happen and Motorola Mobility will remain a separate entity and treated the same as the rest of the Android manufacturers.

Now that Motorola Mobility is under Google’s reigns, we can expect continued support for the Motorola Xoom for quite some time. This part is just conjecture, but logically Google will want the Motorola Xoom to succeed.
